The most wonderful honeymoon destination in the world…
On a cold and windy day like today I cast my mind back to the white beaches and the turquoise waters of the Maldives. Has it really been two years since I woke up to the waves crushing against our overwater bungalow while the sun slowly rose on what was going to be another warm day?
I have been blessed to have seen some of the most wonderful places in the world but none have, and I don’t think will, be as breathtakingly beautiful this cluster of islands in the Indian Ocean.
When it came to choosing our honeymoon destination over Christmas, Maldives was a no brainer. There are so many incredible resorts to choose from, but it being a festive time of year we wanted a smaller hotel that didn’t have too many kids and offered a lot of privacy.
Huvafen Fushi, part of the Per Aquum resorts (here), has 43 stunning bungalows and pavilions, three restaurants, infinity pool and the only underwater spa in the Maldives. After landing in Male, a hotel representative lead us to a modern speedboat and after a short ride we arrived at our home for 10 nights. We were met by the managers and were introduced to our private butler who took care of all our restaurants reservations and activity bookings (the hotels has no reception or concierge).
Our overwater sunset bungalow was very spacious with a separate bedroom and lounge areas, a large bathroom with a stand-alone bath overlooking the ocean, a terrace with a plunge pool and a very generous mini bar!
We spent our days, snorkeling along the house reef (came too close to a couple of black tip sharks which we were told are harmless but it still freaked the hell out of me!), dining, indulging in a free for all ice cream bar, feeding the stingrays with a resident marine biologist, and planting our own coral reef as part of their give back program.
Never found it so hard to leave a place, but that’s the price for a taste of paradise and I’m hope we will be back again soon!
