Countdown is on…

We are exactly one month away from the most magical day of the year and with COVID-19 restrictions being eased up for five days, it’s time to be merry and bright.

While many of us will be spending time at home, some of the best hotels in the UK are pulling out all the stops for those who want to have a change of scene.

Whether you’re making up for cancelled holidays or want all the fuss of cooking and decorating taken out of your hands, below I have picked out some of the most festive hotel packages to make a note of.

The hotel has created a three-day Christmas in Residence package that will keep you merry and bright throughout. Upon arrival, you will be greeted with mulled wine or hot chocolate and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree in your room. A chauffeur is on hand to take you to Hamleys for any last-minute gifts and can also drop you off to St. Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge for a jolly evening service. Haven’t wrapped all your presents? Don’t panic, you’ll have a dedicated Butler to help.

An unforgettable Christmas morning includes personalised stockings stuffed with presents for the kids and a visit from Santa. Grownups can enjoy a glasses of champagne. Get dressed up and head down to the Michelin-starred Céleste where you’ll be treated to a five-course traditional lunch, followed by a live broadcast of the Queen’s speech. The festive cheer continues on Boxing Day as you dig into a fabulous English breakfast after which you can jump into the chauffeur-driven car and swing by Harvey Nichols for an exclusive shopping experience. Your little ones have an option to enjoy a cupcake making class at the famed Peggy Porschen’s or you can just book in for a Festive Afternoon Tea.

In Russia we celebrate Christmas in January and in a very different way, so the novelty of carol songs was lost on me until I was encouraged to join the school orchestra and squeak my way through the annual festive concert as Violin 2. Despite the embarrassment, I have grown to love carols so the holiday package from The Kensington sounds right up my street. Anyone staying at the hotel between the 21-23 December will receive two tickets to the sold-out ‘Carols at The Royal Albert Hall’. The Christmas package includes an overnight stay in a newly refurbished Studio Suite for two, a pre-theatre dinner (£75 credit) at the Drawing Room with a glass of Champagne each, as well as an à la carte breakfast the following morning.

The Christmas Carol package at The Kensington starts from £600 and includes parking, an overnight in a Studio Suite, two tickets to Carols at The Royal Albert Hall, pre-theatre dinner, a bottle of Champagne and à la carte breakfast. Bookable on 21, 22 and 23 December 2020. www.doylecollection.com/hotels/the-kensington-hotel

THE MONTAGUE ON THE GARDENS, LONDON

Won’t be hitting the slopes this festive break? The Montague on the Gardens’ Ski Lodge could be the next best thing. The space looks like a snippet of Courchevel with its pine trees, falling snow, reindeer, snowmen, ski racks, piste maps, woolly rugs, strings of fairy lights and lanterns. Come in a group of six or less and indulge in a selection of après-themed beverages that are served alongside a platter of alpine treats, including mini turkey schnitzel, bratwurst sausage and deep-fried camembert. An ‘Individual Ski Pass’ starts from £40 and gives you access to the Ski Lodge for an hour and a half. There is also a Log Cabin to check out that features a decorative fire, Christmas tree and cosy armchairs with blankets. If you want to celebrate Christmas at the hotel then you’ll be treated to festive package that includes a two-night stay in a suite, a welcome glass of mulled wine or hot chocolate, stockings full of goodies on Christmas morning and a Christmas Day lunch for two guests in the Blue Door Bistro.

Weekend Ski Lodge Passes start from with daytime and evening slots available between Thursday – Sunday at The Montague on the Gardens from December 3. The hotel’s festive package starts from £387 per night based on two adults sharing over two nights. www.montaguehotel.com

UNIVERSITY ARMS, CAMBRIDGE

We visited Cambridge for the first time earlier this year and it’s one of those cities you walk through thinking “bet it’s gorgeous here at Christmas”. University Arms has been on our wish list for a while if you’re in the area then I suggest taking advantage of the Christmas package that is curated for solo travellers, couples or families. Your two-night stay from the 24-26 December includes Sherry and Cream Tea in the Drawing Room on Christmas Eve with an impressive feast served up the following day. The package also includes à la carte breakfast in Chef Tristan Welch’s Parker’s Tavern each morning.

Price

University Arms’ Christmas package starts from £455 for one guest and £665 for two guests and includes a two-night stay on December 24 and 25 with a special Christmas Eve Dinner and Christmas Day Lunch at Parker’s Tavern. www.universityarms.com

THE NEWT IN SOMERSET

Of all of the places in the UK, the Newt in Somerset is at the top of my list. The picturesque getaway is creating a postcard Christmas celebration this year with the four-night package. What I love is that The Newt has plenty of its own produce that is used across food and drinks. For example, seasonal cocktails made with estate liqueurs and cordials. The hotel also encourages you to enjoy it’s great outdoors such as the gardens, woodland and Deer Park which will be open every day except Christmas Day. Afterwards, why not warm your bones at either The Winter Garden and Garden Café that provide comforting lunches, snacks and drinks – such as Sloe Gin and Pumpkin, Walnut & Bath Blue Tart. I suggest grabbing one of the estate hampers to enjoy in your elegant room.

Price

Christmas at The Newt is a four-night minimum stay, from 23- 27 December. Rates start from £2,775 and include a three-course Christmas Eve Supper in The Botanical Rooms; five-course Christmas Day Luncheon with paired wines in The Botanical Rooms; a well-stocked estate hamper to enjoy in the afternoon or evening; three-course Boxing Day vegetable-led lunch in the Garden Café; five-course Boxing Day Feast in The Botanical Rooms and Breakfast each morning. www.thenewtinsomerset.com
